As a leader, how do you foster collaboration between opposing groups? After Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States in 1860, he appointed his chief Republican rivals, William Seward (Secretary of State), Salmon P. Chase (Secretary of Treasury), and Edward Bates (Attorney General) to his cabinet. He even appointed members of the opposition Democratic Party, to prominent positions, including Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War. Abraham Lincoln knew the value of fostering relations among people who may not agree with you, ethically, morally, or politically. According to Forbes (Goman - 4/9/2019), here are 8 strategies leaders use to foster organization-wide collaboration: 1. Rewarding Collaboration - Leaders are changing the reward system by making collaboration part of the performance review process. 2. Communicating Transparently - Organization-wide transparent communication is an important tool for disrupting the silo mentality and fostering collaboration. 3. Encouraging Networks - Leaders accelerate the flow of knowledge and information across boundaries and teams by encouraging workplace relationships and socialization. 4. Creating Alignment Around Unifying Goals - Leaders understand and communicate the overarching goals of the entire organization to highlight the importance of working in concert with other areas. 5. Increasing Innovation Through Diversity - Leaders create cross-functional teams to capture diverse perspectives. 6. Focusing On The Customer - Seamless, customer-centric service takes collaboration across multiple teams. 7. Building Relationships Of Trust - Trust is the belief one party has in the reliability, integrity, and honesty of another party or team and must be fostered in collaborative environments. 8. Redefining Their Role As A Leader - In contrast to the control-minded leaders of the past, today's most effective leaders are getting results through positive influence rather than position. In today's changing times, collaboration has moved from a nice-to-have philosophy to a must-have strategy to allow for better and more diverse viewpoints.
