“No difficulty can discourage, no obstacle dismay, no trouble dishearten the man who has acquired the art of being alive. Difficulties are but dares of fate, obstacles but hurdles to try his skill, troubles but bitter tonics to give him strength; and he rises higher and looms greater after each encounter with adversity.” - Ella Wheeler Wilcox

“Learn avidly. Question it repeatedly. Analyze it carefully. Then put what you have learned into practice intelligently.” - Confucius
How has your learning brought you to where you are? What would it take for you to persevere in the face of almost insurmountable odds? If you owned a business, could you keep the business moving forward if your personal life was falling apart? According to an article in Forbes magazine (Felber 2022) perseverance is essential to finding success in business. Here are three key steps to being perseverant: 1. Stay focused on your goal - The first step in being perseverant is to know your goals and keep your focus on the finish line. 2. Break down your goals - An important part to any success story is to be able to break down your goals into manageable tasks. 3. Visualize success - Creating a mental image of what success looks like in your mind and focusing on that outcome will improve your chances of reaching your goal. How do handle those who think you are small because of your growth? Four Ways to Know if You Can Be Trusted
Here are four quick ways to know if YOU can be trusted by others. Number 1: Are you willing to share with them? Trust in a relationship is usually based on another’s willingness to share secrets, struggles and scars. When someone is going through a difficult time, they want to know they’re not the only one struggling. A person who is unwilling to share with you is probably a person who cannot be trusted. If you’re not willing to share, then don’t expect others to bare their soul to you. Number 2: Can they trust you with the small stuff? Can people trust you to keep even the smallest secret in confidence? Can you refrain from sharing privileged information? If people can’t trust you with little information, then why or should they give you more? Number 3: Are you easily offended? Are you a person who constantly puts others on trial? The truth is, if you’re a person who is easily offended, it will always be hard for others to build trust with you, because they’ll find themselves spending more time “repairing” their relationship with you rather than “building” a relationship with you. How can a person build trust with you if they’re always afraid of offending you? Number 4: How is your relationship with others? The proof a person can be trusted can always be found in the quality of existing relationships. Trustworthy people tend to attract others to them because they’re trustworthy. People typically shy away from untrustworthy people. Trust is a two-way street. If you truly desire to build relationships with others you can trust, then simply focus on being the kind of trustworthy friend you desire to find. “The gods envy us. They envy us because we are mortal, because any moment may be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we are doomed.” - Achilles
How do you appreciate the finite life you have? According to studies, 14% of everything we say can be classified as gossip and 66% of general conversation in the workplace is devoted to gossip about other employees (Cole & Dalton 2009). Further studies reveal that a person who does not gossip may be marginalized from their social group, whereas a person who gossips excessively may also be marginalized from their social group (Eggins & Slade 1997). Millennials (81%) are most likely to gossip at work, followed by Gen Xers (70%), and Baby Boomers (60%). Here are some helpful tips for dealing with gossip: 1. Recognize the difference between information and gossip. As long as it remains professional, a coworker is perfectly within their rights to tell you about another employee. 2. Stop it in its tracks. When someone says something that is unprofessional about a coworker, have the courage to speak up and say that you aren't comfortable talking about someone else in this manner. (Sometimes easier said than done, I know.) 3. Alter the conversation. Instead of allowing the discussion to go down the gossip route, change it to something more professional. 4. Maintain privacy of your personal life. Unless you feel confident you can trust a particular coworker, the rule of thumb is to never share your personal life with anyone at work. Watch the video below to learn about how one of our founding fathers changed their behavior of constantly gossiping, to become United State Ambassador to one of our closest allies. Also, leave me a comment about some additional suggestions you have to dealing with gossip, in or out of the workplace. “If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies in yourself.” - Minquas Proverb
