Owen Young a motivational writer, cites one reason that he believes prevents average business people from becoming leaders, their unwillingness to pay the price of responsibility. According to Young, three things make up the "price of responsibility:" 1. hard-driving continual work, 2. the courage to make difficult decisions, and 3. brutal honesty about your abilities. These are qualities Young believes every exceptional leader should possess. Do you agree with him? If you had to make a list of the attributes and behaviors that a good leader possesses, what would be on your list? The three men below are examples of people who paid the price of responsibility. Vincent Van Gough, one of the most recognized painters of all times, only sold one painting during his lifetime and yet is responsible for creating over 900 works of art. In the Bible, David showed tremendous courage in deciding to take on a bigger, stronger, and more powerful opponent in Goliath. His actions rallied an entire Army to follow him. Abolitionist and former slave, Frederick Douglass had to create and define his own moral, intellectual, and emotional infrastructure which he used to develop his unique leadership style.
