A leader chooses to effectively communicate the mission that needs to be accomplished, allow his or her subordinates to determine how to accomplish the mission by empowering them, support the team in whatever ways are necessary, and periodically check-in to make sure the mission is being accomplished. In essence, a leader's job is to add value to make sure the team gets what it needs to get the mission accomplished. However, a leader must command respect by earning the trust of their subordinates. But how do command respect? 1. They make sure you adequately supervise your team. 2. They act as a servant leader. 3. They never have a lapse in character and operate with impeccable integrity. 4. They never allow negative perceptions to exist within the group. 5. They refuse to tolerate toxic individuals. 6. They create a culture of accountability where they refuse to make excuses or blame others. One hundred sixty-three of the Fortune 500 companies are run by men and women who served in the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps has three core values: Honor - Courage - Commitment. A leader sets the standard, a leader supports his or her team, and a leader chooses to take responsibility for getting the job done. In a nutshell, a leader serves.
