​As Alexander the Great lay dying, he summoned his counselors and asked them to carry out his final three wishes.
His first wish was that only his physicians carry his coffin to the grave. His second wish was that when his coffin was on the way to his burial plot, that the path leading to the cemetery be strewn with gold, silver and precious stones. His final wish was that both of his hands be left hanging out of his coffin.
When one of his counselors asked why Alexander had made such strange wishes, he responded, “I would like the world to know what I have learned. I want my physicians to carry my coffin to show people that no doctor can really cure anybody. They are powerless to save a person from the clenches of death. People should not take life for granted and should be responsible for their own health.”
Regarding his second wish, he said, “I want people to understand that not an ounce of my gold will be coming with me to the next life. I spent my entire existence centered on greed and power but can take none of my wealth with me. Let people realize it is sheer folly to chase fortune.”
Concerning his hands hanging out of his coffin, he replied, “I want people to see my hands and understand I came into this world empty-handed, and I now leave it in the same manner.”
