Please check out the article detailing my cancer journey that was recently published in the Q4 issue of the Kicking Cancer Chronicle. You can read the article here or tap on the Kickin' Cancer logo at the bottom of this post:
https://kicking-cancer.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Q.-4-2023.pdf Kickin' Cancer is an Oregon based organization with the mission of empowering individuals to thrive in their cancer journey, through support and education. You can learn more about Kickin' Cancer at: https://kicking-cancer.org/ As a leader, what type of people do you surround yourself with? Human beings gravitate toward people that are like them. We like to hang around with others who look like us, act like us, and have similar experiences to us. But, are there benefits to having people around you who don't look like you, who act differently than you, who have different experiences than you? The short answer is, Yes. Good and effective leaders surround themselves with different points of view and listen to understand different perspectives. According to an online article in Substack (Blaschak 4/30/2023), here are five reasons you should surround yourself with complementary (not complimentary) people: 1. Competence - It allows you to focus on your unique strengths. No matter how good you are as a leader, you can't possibly know everything. Seek counsel and guidance from those who have an expertise that is different from your own. 2. Confidence - You'll look like a better leader. When you allow your team to focus on their expertise and strength, they will perform better and provide greater value to the company. 3. Candor - You'll get what you need to hear versus what you want to hear. A competent advisor allows you to see blind spots you might not have seen if you surrounded yourself with "yes" people. 4. Curiosity - You'll learn new things. Leaders who seek out diverse ideas, views, and perspectives are open to learning from those who might have opinions and experiences different from their own. 5. Connection - It's not about you. Leaders who surround themselves with complementary people know it's not about them. The strongest and most productive teams are diverse and balanced in skill set, experience, and perspective. Please check out the video below to learn more about the importance of surrounding yourself with people who will give you different perspectives. Also, leave me a comment about other benefits you see in surrounding yourself with a diverse group of people. What principles guide your life?
How do we define a life principle? It is the imagined force to which the functions and qualities peculiar to living things are sometimes ascribed. These are the unbending truths by which a person of integrity lives their life. In order to internalize your truths, you have to know yourself, you have to understand your strengths and weaknesses, and you have to discern what means the most to you and what you are willing to give your life to, with the recognition you may never obtain your goals. One of the best ways to know yourself is to spend time with you. Take ten minutes every day and sit quietly with yourself without any devices or distractions. Let your mind wander wherever it wants to go. Pay attention to what your mind is focusing on. While there are many principles you can choose to support the best version of your life, here are 5 life principles from Reggie Fils-Aime, the former president of Nintendo: 1. What happens to you, is up to you. Own your journey. 2. Life is hard, so dig deep. Tenacity and grit are essential qualities for living a successful life. 3. Be open to alternatives. Don't get stuck on a path that isn't leading you toward your best self. Be willing to change course. 4. Embrace your fear. Overcome fear through relentless practice and dogged determination. 5. Live in the moment and have fun along the way. There is nothing you can do about yesterday (except learn from it) and tomorrow is never promised. Enjoy the people and experiences to have along your life journey. What do you think of Fils-Aime's principles? Are there some principles you would add or detract from? Please leave me a comment below about your thoughts on the principles we should all consider to lead our uncommon and extraordinary lives.
