When was the last time you volunteered for a cause or organization you believed in? Maybe you coached your child's sports team, or helped out at a senior center, or agreed to lead an activity or group at your place of worship. While it is kind and generous to give of your time, did you ever think that maybe there could be an enhancement to your skill set on top of it making you feel good about yourself? According to a July 9, 2022 article from Indeed, here are ten skills you can gain from volunteering: 1. Time management skills. 2. Teamwork skills. 3. Improved work ethic. 4. Leadership skills. 5. Compassion. 6. Communication skills. 7. Commitment. 8. Problem-solving skills. 9. Training skills. 10. Interpersonal skills. You can use your volunteer skills to help you stand out among other job applicants. You can highlight your volunteering skills in your cover letter when applying for a new job, or on your curriculum vitae (CV), or emphasize them during a job interview. Your new or enhanced skills could possibly lead to a full or part-time job within the organization you are volunteering with. Check out the video below to hear some interesting perspectives about the importance of volunteering within your community. Also, please leave me a comment about your thoughts on volunteering and if you have ever benefited professionally from volunteering your time for an organization you believed in. All of us have abilities and disabilities. We are good at some things and not so good at others. Some of us are physically unable to do things the way everyone else does because we have a disability. My disability is that I have had my leg amputated and I have cancerous tumors in my lungs but I found a way to write a book and speak on the importance of controlling your mind. Helen Keller was deaf and blind but became an outspoken advocate for people with disabilities. John Nash has acute paranoid schizophrenia but is a Noble-prize winning mathematician and economist. Our disabilities can define us as positively or negatively as our abilities. It all depends how we see ourselves and how we expect to be seen by others. We tend to see what we are looking for.
