There have been many times over my almost 14-year cancer journey when I needed to control my mind, as I describe in Truth #1 of my book, Four Truths and a Lie. None more so than during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when I had my above-the-knee leg amputation.
Because of the pandemic, I wasn't allowed to have anyone with me before or after surgery. My wife literally dropped me off at the hospital the morning of the amputation. She had to wait in the hospital parking lot until the surgeon called her to say the operation was complete. I was the only surgery scheduled that day, since most surgeries had been put on hold due to the pandemic. The only people in the cavernous pre-op area preparing me for surgery were a nurse and an anesthesia resident. I was told I'd be in the hospital for 10-14 days after the amputation to learn how to function without a leg; however, I was sent home 48 hours after the operation because the medical staff were concerned I would be exposed to COVID. To say that I was scared going into the operation would be an understatement. However, you cannot change what you refuse to confront. I knew that if I didn't control my mind, it would run away with all the negative things that could happen as a result of the amputation, and control me.
