What do hard times create?
As the United States is engulfed in the political process of electing another president to "lead" our country, I don't believe I've seen such consternation from one political party trying to retain power at all costs and the other party trying to obtain power at all costs. Even while looking at the same circumstances, one group focuses on how terrible times are, while the other group espouses that times have never been better. I'm just spitballing here, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that our forefathers never expected that "politician" would be a job description. That the need to retain or obtain power would force decent individuals to do what was prudent to keep their job instead of doing their job. That the needs of the many would be subverted by the needs of the few to obtain dominance over others. Regardless of whether you believe times are good or not, I'm reminded of the line from the postapocalyptic novel, Those Who Remain, by G. Michael Hopf: Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times. This cyclical look at how hard, strong, good, and weak people and events shape our daily lives certainly should give us pause to consider where we fit on this hamster wheel. Irrespective of whether times are good or not, my parents taught me that no one gets everything they want all the time. That sharing my time, talents, and treasures was the right thing to do and would garner me a wealth of friends and supporters. That compromising so all could have some was how we made good times. Leave me a comment about your thoughts regarding what hard times do or could create if we took more time to see the value in our fellow man.
