How often do you praise others?
I was discussing my relationship with my daughter with one of the nurses who cares for me during my infusion therapy. I commented that, even as an adult, I tell my daughter how much I love her and how proud of her I am - not in an artificial way, but in a sincere and caring manner. My nurse, who is adopted, was astonished I encourage my daughter so often and commented that her parents never told her they loved her or were proud of her. I was sad when my nurse replied. Don't we all deserve a genuine pat on the back and encouragement when we do a good job? Parenting expert, Gwen Dewar, Ph. D. recommends 7 tips for using praise with young people: 1. Children need parental support and encouragement constantly, not just when they've accomplished something praiseworthy. 2. Don't give insincere praise, it can trigger bad feelings. 3. Also, be careful about using extreme praise. 4. Avoid praising children for achievements that come without effort. 5. Praise young people for things they can control, not for their gifted abilities. 6. Don't over-praise children for things they enjoy. 7. When praising, don't compare kids to others. Since praise is a verbal reward, receiving praise can boost self-esteem, increase performance, and remind people of their strengths and accomplishments. Receiving a compliment means that others value us and what we are doing. Praising others not only makes them happy, but it also improves one's physical and mental health, strengthens one's interpersonal relationships, and makes one grateful. Leave me a comment about your thoughts on the importance of praise in your daily interactions with family, friends, and co-workers.
