How often do you get what you want?
I was recently asked to provide my thoughts on how to go about getting a raise. I commented that many people use the wrong metrics when asking for a raise. They tell their supervisor that they deserve a raise because they have the most tenure, have the most experience, or would be the most difficult to replace. Despite what you think, asking for and receiving a raise isn't about you, it's about the value you bring to the group, department, and organization. If you want to receive a raise, you need to demonstrate the value, in terms of sales, management, or customer service, that you bring to the company. You must provide quantifiable data to back up your case. In addition, at your annual review, explain that you want to be part of the group working on the newest projects and strategies. Develop a plan with your supervisor about how you go about being a member of that partnership and get a commitment that you will be given the training and resources necessary to ensure you are equipped to be successful. Getting what you want in life is about demonstrating the value you will bring to make other people's lives better and how hard you're willing to work to make sure you have the skills necessary to provide that benefit. Nobody is going to do it for you. Don't expect others to give you what you want. It's not that they're against you, they're just for themselves. Leave me a comment about your thoughts on how you go about getting what you want in your life.
