Most people never slow down long enough to understand why they react, choose, or avoid the things they do. Truth #1 from my book, Four Truths and a Lie, is simple: You must control your mind, or it will control you, and you cannot change what you refuse to confront.
Here are three signs you are gaining Self-Awareness: 1. You Can Pause Before Reacting - Instead of instantly responding with anger, anxiety, or impulsive decisions, you notice the emotion rise — and you choose how to positively act. Example: You receive a stressful message, but take a moment to think it through, and reply calmly. Why it matters: That pause is a sign your mind is responding, not merely reacting. 2. You Can Intentionally Redirect Your Thoughts - You recognize when your mind is spiraling into worry, negativity, or distraction — and you can gently shift it. Example: You catch yourself dramatizing, and you guide your thinking toward solutions or reality-based reasoning. Why it matters: The ability to notice your thoughts and shift them shows strong mental regulation. 3. Your Emotions No Longer Dictate Your Happiness - You still feel emotions (everyone does), but they don’t take over. You can experience them without being consumed or controlled by them. Example: A setback frustrates you, but you recover quickly instead of staying upset for hours or days. Why it matters: This is a sign of emotional maturity and inner peace.
