At fifteen, I underwent the first of three knee surgeries in high school to remove a torn cartilage. An infection prevented scar tissue from forming, leaving my knee without a vital buffer. Every attempt to return to the basketball court resulted in uncontrollable swelling and pain.
After school let out, an exploratory surgery revealed that twenty-five bone fragments had chipped away. I spent the entire summer in a cast from my hip to my ankle, while my doctor explained my basketball-playing days were likely over. Fortunately, I refused to accept his prediction. Through grueling rehabilitation, I didn’t just return to the game I loved; I earned a Division I athletic scholarship to play college basketball. However, the physical recovery was only half the battle. When I returned to the court, my mind became a minefield of negative self-talk. Thoughts like, "You’re probably a step slower now," and "College coaches won't be interested in recruiting you," plagued me. Without knowing the science behind it, I began a conscious effort to intercept these destructive thoughts and replace them with positive ones. Cleveland Clinic Psychologist Scott Bea, PsyD, describes this as changing our relationship with our thoughts. Rather than reacting to every image or idea that enters our consciousness, he recommends mindfulness. When pessimistic thoughts take hold, Dr. Bea suggests grounding yourself in the present for 5 to 10 seconds by focusing on your breathing or the rhythm of your footsteps. Mindfulness can help us understand what is true by keeping us grounded in the present.[1] Mindfulness is one of the many topics I explore in my book, Four Truths and a Lie: Ancient Wisdom For Living Your Modern Purpose, where I share the lessons that helped me move forward. I realize the delivery is dull and slow, and that is on purpose. I make the videos available because a friend suggested the information might be valuable. Please concentrate on the information presented, not on the delivery. The information is to help you get better. The delivery is to help me get better.)
