What does it mean to know something truly?
Not just understand it, but to know it in your being. To make it part of who you are. Catholic priest Fr. Richard Rohr said, "Deep knowing and presence do not happen with our thinking minds. To truly know something, our whole being must be open, awake, and present." The older and more set in our ways we get, the less open to trying new things we become. But age is only a number and there is no reason we shouldn't be amenable to new experiences. According to an article by Eliza Hartley, who writes for Global English Editing, people who remain open to experiences usually display these nine behaviors: 1. They embrace change. 2. They're lifelong learners. 3. They maintain a diverse social network. 4. They're open-minded. 5. They're not afraid of failure. 6. They value relationships. 7. They maintain a sense of wonder. 8. They're adaptable. 9. They prioritize personal growth. To know something you have to embrace it, you have to be open-minded, you have to value it, you have to see the wonder in it, you have to change as it changes or it wants you to change, and it must be a priority in your life. But if you possess all the traits listed above, how long does it take to know something and make it part of your being? According to a study at University College London, it takes 66 days before something novel becomes automatic and anywhere from two months to eight months to form a new habit. While this may seem like a long time, if you want to accurately incorporate something into your person, you have to commit to leaning into the work necessary to know and to get to month eight, you have to start at month one. Please leave me a comment about your thoughts on what it means to know something. |
