How much effort do you put into your work?
The industrialist Andrew Carnegie once said, "The average person puts only twenty-five percent of their energy and ability into their work. The world takes its hat off to those who put in more than fifty percent of their capacity, and stands on its head for those few-and-far-between souls who devote one hundred percent." According to a June 2024 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Study, those workers who worked from home spent 5.1 hours working, while those who worked at their workplace put in 7.9 hours. According to a 2023 article in worklife.news, the career resources website, Zippia found that during an eight-hour workday, the average employee only spent about 4 hours and 12 minutes working each day. This is interesting because studies show that most workers are only actually productive for less than three hours each eight-hour work period and the peak hours for cognitive ability and alertness are between 10:00 AM and noon. If you want to be more productive at work, try implementing the 1-3-5 Rule. This formula suggests arranging your work day into 1 big mission, 3 medium tasks, and 5 small things. Most people don't get much accomplished at work because they spend too much time being distracted and putting out fires during the course of their day. Benefits of using the 1-3-5 Rule include: increased productivity, prioritization of work tasks, improved focus, feeling of accomplishment, and reduced overload. Understanding that we are at our best for only a few hours each day, it's important to implement quality habits that allow us to give the maximum effort to the most important task of the day and taper our effort on less consequential assignments. Leave me a comment about how you maximize your productivity at work each day. Please check out my latest audio recording from the Beyond Human Podcast with Dr. Nick Delgado.
