I once believed that motivation alone was sufficient for success. Over time, however, I came to realize that motivation—while essential—is not enough on its own.
To achieve meaningful goals, two additional elements are required: discipline and strong habits. Motivation, discipline, and good habits function much like a three-legged stool. Each leg is necessary for stability. Remove one, and the stool becomes unbalanced and unable to support you. For instance, being motivated and disciplined but maintaining poor habits makes sustained success difficult. Likewise, having discipline and good habits without the motivation to apply them limits productivity and progress. Throughout my basketball career, my experiences as a podcast guest, and the process of writing my books, I have consistently seen how aligning motivation, discipline, and strong habits creates effectiveness and momentum. You can explore this concept further by reading the second Truth in my book, Four Truths and a Lie. Copies are available here: www.amazon.com/dp/B0FPMG37DF Your life is so crazy and amazing at the same time.
The odds that your parents had the correct DNA to make you the unique person that you are are 1 in 400,000,000,000,000,000! One of life's core goals is survival; the other is meaning. Not everything meaningful is loud and dramatic. Sometimes it's the conversation you didn't rush. The kindness you didn't have to offer. The grace you gave when it would've been easier not to. My 90-year-old mother with dementia couldn't tell you what she had for breakfast, but she still remembers the after-dinner walks she took with her father as a little girl. Walks that almost always ended with an ice cream cone shared over quiet conversation. "What you leave behind is what you weave in the hearts of others." Truth #3 isn't about perfection - it's about meaningful presence. Dive deeper into this truth in Four Truths and a Lie. Available on Amazon here: www.amazon.com/dp/B0FPMG37DF Who is someone who quietly brought meaning to your life?
