"I can't save people who don't want to change," is a truth many people learn after exhausting themselves trying to "fix" a spouse, a child, or a friend.
"I don't actually communicate my needs," is something people learn when they expect others to "just know" what they need. This mindset often leads to disappointment or resentment. "Time doesn't heal everything - effort and honesty do," is something people struggle with because they aren't ready or willing to do the hard work to heal themselves. Many truths are learned the hard way because people aren't willing to do what is necessary to dispel their dysfunction and live their truths. They keep making the same mistakes over and over, thinking things will turn out differently. Leave a post about a time when you learned a truth the hard way. Great answers may be featured in a follow-up post. Also, get your copy of: Four Truths and a Lie, Ancient Wisdom For Living Your Modern Purpose, to learn how to live your truths. There have been many times over my almost 14-year cancer journey when I needed to control my mind, as I describe in Truth #1 of my book, Four Truths and a Lie. None more so than during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when I had my above-the-knee leg amputation.
Because of the pandemic, I wasn't allowed to have anyone with me before or after surgery. My wife literally dropped me off at the hospital the morning of the amputation. She had to wait in the hospital parking lot until the surgeon called her to say the operation was complete. I was the only surgery scheduled that day, since most surgeries had been put on hold due to the pandemic. The only people in the cavernous pre-op area preparing me for surgery were a nurse and an anesthesia resident. I was told I'd be in the hospital for 10-14 days after the amputation to learn how to function without a leg; however, I was sent home 48 hours after the operation because the medical staff were concerned I would be exposed to COVID. To say that I was scared going into the operation would be an understatement. However, you cannot change what you refuse to confront. I knew that if I didn't control my mind, it would run away with all the negative things that could happen as a result of the amputation, and control me.
